Average Cost of Bobtail Insurance: 2026 Insights

Between June and September of 2026, our research team built a weighted model of average bobtail insurance costs per month using rate data, underwriting benchmarks, and state premium tax schedules. The national average cost of bobtail insurance in 2026 is $38 per month ($456 per year), with rates ranging from roughly $23 to more than $59 per month depending on the variables broken down below by section.

Average Cost of Bobtail Insurance by Business Tax Structure

How an owner-operator files taxes does not set the bobtail rate directly, but it changes the underwriting profile. The table below shows modeled averages for the five most common structures in trucking.

Business Structure Avg. Monthly Cost Avg. Annual Cost Typical Operator Profile Contributing Factors
Sole Proprietor $40 $480 Newer owner-operators, often in the first 1 to 2 years Shorter business history, fewer years of continuous coverage, and a personal credit file tied to the policy
Single-Member LLC $38 $456 Established one-truck operators leased to a carrier Baseline profile: one named driver, one unit, and a documented business history
Multi-Member LLC or Partnership $41 $492 Husband-wife teams or two-partner operations Two or more listed drivers widen exposure, and the rate follows the weakest driving record
LLC Taxed as an S-Corporation $36 $432 Operators 3+ years in business with steady revenue Most likely to qualify for business-experience and prior-insurance discounts
C-Corporation $43 $516 (per unit) Small fleets that lease units and drivers onto a carrier Multiple scheduled units, non-owner drivers, and fleet-level loss history

The operator’s history and number of drivers matter more than the tax election itself. S-corporation filers sit at the low end because they tend to be established operators who qualify for the business-experience discounts insurers such as Progressive offer after three years in business. Multi-member and corporate structures cost more because each added driver raises the policy’s exposure.

Average Cost of Bobtail Insurance by Policy Bundling Status

Bobtail coverage is rarely bought alone, and the lines packaged with it change its effective price. The table below compares a standalone bobtail policy with the most common bundles.

Bundling Status Avg. Monthly Cost (Bobtail Portion) Avg. Annual Cost (Bobtail Portion) Est. Savings vs. Standalone Contributing Factors
Standalone Bobtail Policy $42 $504 0% No multi-policy credit, plus a separate policy fee and billing schedule
Bobtail + Personal Auto (same carrier) $40 $479 5% Cross-line credit for personal vehicles insured with the same company
Bobtail + Physical Damage $38 $454 10% Carrier holds both the liability and the vehicle risk, so it underwrites the unit once
Bobtail + Physical Damage + Cargo $36 $428 15% Deeper account relationship and a single claims contact across three lines
Full Owner-Operator Package (Bobtail, NTL, Physical Damage, Cargo, Occupational Accident) $34 $403 20% Maximum multi-policy credit and one set of policy fees

Data here reveals that bundling is the largest discount an operator can get without changing coverage. Industry benchmarks put multi-policy savings at 10% to 20%, which amounts to about $100 a year on the bobtail line alone and much more on the physical damage premium bundled with it. Standalone buyers pay the most because every policy carries its own fees and none of the account-level credit.

Average Cost of Bobtail Insurance by Total Coverage Limit

The liability limit is the most direct price lever on a bobtail policy because it caps what the insurer can pay on one claim. The table below shows modeled averages across the limits most often written.

Coverage Limit (CSL) Avg. Monthly Cost Avg. Annual Cost Change vs. $1M Baseline Factors Behind the Average
$300,000 $27 $324 -29% Rarely accepted by motor carriers and mainly used for local, light-duty operations
$500,000 $31 $372 -18% Lower payout ceiling, but many lease agreements no longer accept it
$750,000 $35 $420 -8% Matches the federal minimum for general freight carriers, and some leases still accept it
$1,000,000 $38 $456 Baseline The standard limit required by most carrier lease agreements
$1,500,000 $48 $576 +26% Required by some shippers and high-value freight programs
$2,000,000 $59 $708 +55% Excess-style exposure priced against rising verdict sizes in trucking litigation

The data shows that cost climbs faster above $1 million than it falls below it. Cutting the limit from $1 million to $500,000 saves about $84 a year, while doubling it to $2 million adds about $252. That pattern follows ATRI’s finding that premiums for higher liability layers rose far faster than primary layers from 2021 to 2024, which is where large jury awards hit hardest.

Average Cost of Bobtail Insurance by Billing and Payment Frequency

The same policy can cost different amounts depending on how the premium is paid. The table below compares total annual cost across common billing plans for a $1 million bobtail policy.

Billing Plan Total Annual Cost Effective Monthly Cost Cost vs. Paid in Full Factors Behind the Average
Paid in Full (Annual) $432 $36 Baseline Pay-in-full discount, commonly 10% or more, with no installment fees
Semi-Annual (2 payments) $450 $37.50 +4% Smaller discount and one added billing cycle
Quarterly (4 payments) $462 $38.50 +7% No pay-in-full credit and a per-installment fee on each bill
Monthly via EFT or Autopay $480 $40 +11% Autopay discount partly offsets lower-cost installment fees
Monthly Direct Bill (card or check) $504 $42 +17% Full installment fees plus processing charges on each payment
Premium-Financed $522 $43.50 +21% Finance charges from a third-party lender and a 15% to 25% down payment for new ventures

Billing choices alone create a $90 spread on an identical policy. Paying in full is the cheapest option because it earns the insurer’s pay-in-full discount and avoids every installment fee. For operators who need to pay monthly, autopay closes about a third of that gap.

Average Cost of Bobtail Insurance by State

Garaging state affects bobtail pricing through litigation climate, traffic density, and state premium taxes built into every policy. The table below ranks all 50 states from lowest to highest modeled annual premium and shows each state’s premium tax rate on property and casualty insurance.

*State premiums scale the $456 national baseline by each state’s commercial trucking rate index, compressed to reflect bobtail’s narrower price variance.

*Tax rates reflect the NAIC’s December 2025 premium tax chart for property and casualty lines. Arizona includes its 0.4312% vehicle surcharge, Utah its 0.01% auto surcharge, and West Virginia its combined 1% additional tax, 0.55% surcharge, and 0.5% fire marshal tax. New York policies written in the metropolitan commuter transportation district also carry a 17% MTA surcharge on the premium tax.

The data reveals that a New Jersey operator pays about 2.4 times what an identical operator in Mississippi pays for the same bobtail policy. Premium tax explains very little of that gap. Mississippi carries a higher tax rate than New Jersey, which points to litigation climate and claim severity as the real drivers. West Virginia and Hawaii carry the heaviest tax load at more than $24 per policy, while Illinois and Wyoming add less than $2.50.

What 2026 Bobtail Data Shows

Bobtail insurance is still one of the cheapest lines in a trucking program, but its price depends on decisions the operator controls. Across the five factors in this report, coverage limit and garaging state create the widest spreads, while bundling and billing frequency give operators the easiest way to save. An owner-operator who bundles bobtail into a full package and pays in full can bring an average $456 premium down to roughly $360 without reducing coverage. The wider market is pushing in the other direction. ATRI reports that trucking insurance premiums per mile rose another 6.4% in the first quarter of 2026, the fastest increase of any cost line item, even as truck crash rates declined. Litigation, not crash frequency, keeps setting the floor for liability pricing, and bobtail premiums are following the same trend.
