Average Fleet Insurance Cost per Month: A 2026 Benchmark

Between January and September of 2026, our research team built a weighted model of average fleet insurance costs per month using rate data, underwriting benchmarks, and trends of claims.

The national average fleet insurance cost per month in 2026 is $750 per truck, with per-unit rates ranging from roughly $545 to more than $1,325 depending on the different variables broken down below by respective section. Conclusively, the categories and numbers are benchmarked across 2020, 2023, and 2026.

Average Cost of Fleet Insurance per Month by Deductible Level

Deductible selection is one of the few cost levers a fleet manager controls directly at renewal. The table below breaks out average monthly premiums per truck across five common commercial deductible tiers.

Deductible Level Avg. Monthly Premium (Per Truck) Share of Fleets Choosing This Tier % Savings vs. $500 Deductible Primary Cost Driver
$500 $825 18% 0% Full first dollar physical damage coverage keeps the collision and comprehensive line at its highest point
$1,000 $780 42% 5% The most common commercial fleet deductible, balancing monthly savings against manageable out-of-pocket risk
$2,500 $760 26% 8% Fits fleets with two or more claims-free years and enough cash reserve to self-fund minor repairs
$5,000 $735 10% 11% Used mainly by larger fleets that self-insure smaller physical damage losses internally
$10,000 $710 4% 14% Reserved for fleets running a formal self-insured retention program on newer, lower-value equipment

Even though raising a fleet’s deductible from $500 to $10,000 saves 14% off the average monthly premium, the deductible itself increases twentyfold. Most of that gain comes early, since moving from $500 to $1,000 alone accounts for roughly a third of the total available savings. Fleets holding at $500 or $1,000 still make up 60% of the market, which points to savings many claims-free operators have not yet captured.

Average Cost of Fleet Insurance per Month by Operating Radius

Operating radius predicts how many hours a truck spends on the road, how often it parks overnight away from a secured yard, and how many states its liability exposure touches. The table below breaks out average monthly premiums per truck across four radius tiers.

Operating Radius Avg. Monthly Premium (Per Truck) Share of Fleet Trucks Primary Cost Driver Secondary Cost Factor
Local (0-50 mile radius) $545 22% Frequent stops and urban intersection exposure No overnight parking risk away from a secured yard
Intermediate (51-200 mile radius) $650 24% Blended mix of local stops and multi-county highway miles Occasional overnight dwell time outside the home terminal
Regional (201-500 mile radius) $760 32% Multi-state lane exposure with one to three nights away from home per week Cross-state liability exposure and varying state minimum requirements
Long-Haul/National (500+ mile radius) $980 22% Highest annual mileage and unattended overnight parking in unfamiliar lots Weather variability and litigation exposure across multiple regions

Moving from a local radius to long-haul or national operations nearly doubles the average monthly premium, climbing from $545 to $980 per truck. Regional haul sits closest to the fleet-wide average, which tracks with how underwriters treat it: enough multi-state exposure to price above local and intermediate tiers, but without the extended overnight dwell time that pushes long-haul to the top. Regional operations also carry the largest single share of fleet trucks in this data set at 32%.

Average Cost of Fleet Insurance per Month by Cargo Type

What a truck hauls changes its risk profile as much as where it drives. Laid out below is the average monthly premiums per truck across six cargo classes, from general dry freight to hazardous materials.

Cargo Type Avg. Monthly Premium (Per Truck) Share of Fleet Trucks by Cargo Primary Cost Driver Cargo Line Impact
Dry Van/General Freight $650 44% Baseline claim frequency and moderate freight value Motor truck cargo line typically $50 to $80 per truck per month
Refrigerated (Reefer) $820 18% Spoilage claims and reefer unit mechanical breakdown Cargo line often two to three times the dry van baseline
Flatbed $860 16% Load securement risk and claims tied to exposed, uncovered freight Higher physical damage claims from tie-down and shifting-load incidents
Tanker/Bulk Liquid (non-hazmat) $980 8% Rollover risk and product-loss claims tied to liquid surge Specialized equipment endorsements add to the base package
Auto Hauler/Specialized Equipment $1,050 6% High per-unit cargo value and transport damage exposure Cargo sub-limits frequently required per vehicle hauled
Hazmat $1,325 8% Federal minimum liability up to $5 million and environmental cleanup exposure Cargo and pollution liability endorsements stack on top of the base package

The data reveals that hazmat carries the highest average monthly premium in this report at $1,325 per truck, more than double the dry van baseline, driven by federal minimum liability limits that can reach $5 million and environmental cleanup exposure that general freight never triggers. Auto hauler and specialized equipment rank second, reflecting the high per-unit cargo value carried on a single trailer. Dry van and general freight remain the largest cargo category by share at 44%, which keeps it the anchor point for the rest of the table.

Average Cost of Fleet Insurance per Month by Telematics and Safety Profiles

Underwriters are pricing commercial auto liability more on what they can verify than on what a fleet reports at application. The following table breaks out average monthly premiums per truck across five tiers of telematics and safety technology adoption.

Safety/Telematics Tier Avg. Monthly Premium (Per Truck) Adoption Share Among Fleets Discount vs. No-Telematics Baseline What Underwriters Look For
Predictive Safety Tech (AI dash cam, ADAS, active coaching) $605 12% 32% Documented reduction in hard-braking and near-miss events tied to a coaching log
Verified Telematics (ELD and GPS, monitored) $700 33% 22% Verified mileage, hours-of-service compliance, and basic driver scoring shared at renewal
Video-Only Dash Cam $735 9% 18% Exoneration footage in disputed liability claims and a documented retention policy
Installed, Unmonitored Telematics $780 16% 13% Hardware exists but produces no coaching trail the underwriter can price against
No Telematics (Federal ELD Only) $895 30% 0% No behavioral data available, so the tier prices conservatively against a thin safety record

Evidently, the gap between the most and least technology-equipped fleets runs to $290 a truck per month, with predictive safety tech averaging $605 against $895 for fleets running no telematics beyond the federal ELD mandate. Owning telematics hardware alone does not move the number much, since installed but unmonitored systems still average $780, just 13% below the no-telematics baseline. Underwriters are pricing verified behavior change over time, not the presence of a device on the dashboard.

Primary Auto Liability Line (Per Truck) $280 $330 $410 +46%
Motor Truck Cargo Line (Per Truck) $50 $58 $70 +40%
National Blended Cost per Mile (All Coverage) $0.076 $0.088 $0.106 +39%
High-Theft/Target Commodity Surcharge (Per Truck) $165 $195 $245 +48%

The data reveals that every category in this table moved in the same direction between 2020 and 2026: upwards, and mostly by a wide margin. High-theft and target commodity surcharges posted the steepest increase at 48%, followed closely by long-haul and national radius operations and hazmat cargo, both climbing 46% to 47%. Predictive safety technology posted the smallest increase of any category at 24%, the clearest signal in this data set that active telematics adoption is the one lever fleets control that has measurably slowed their own rate of increase.

Conclusion

Average fleet insurance cost per month in 2026 depends on four variables that stack rather than average out: deductible level, operating radius, cargo type, and telematics adoption. A hazmat tanker running long-haul lanes with no telematics faces a materially different monthly bill than a dry van truck running regional lanes on a $2,500 deductible with a monitored safety program, even though both trucks operate under the same federal rules. Deductible selection and telematics adoption are the two categories fleets control directly, while radius and cargo are often dictated by the freight itself. Nevertheless, every category ascended in monthly rates over time.
